Old Roofs: Unseen Problems for Your Home

A house is not much of a home without a protective roof over your family’s head. In order to keep yourself and your family safe, it’s important to properly care for your roof. This means that the roof needs to be replaced in a timely fashion. There are a number of problems that old roofs present to homeowners and their families.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Old Roof

Leaks

Old roofs are more prone to leaks from years of damage. It is important to carefully inspect the interior of your roofing area for any potential leaks. Water damage caused by untreated roofing leaks can put your home and its very foundation at risk of decay. It can also lead to the growth of mold, which can cause a multitude of health problems and is especially dangerous for those with breathing problems, such as asthma.

Beams of Light

While inspecting the interior area of your roof for leaks, be sure to also check for beams of light that shine through any holes in the roof. For obvious reasons, it’s best to do this inspection during sunny daylight hours. It is not uncommon to find light beams shining through a roof that needs to be repaired or replaced.

Decay

If you find that your roof is sagging or dripping with condensation, your roof is likely rotting. If your roof is decaying or soaked with water, then it’s advised to replace the entire roof. Not only is a rotting roof unsightly, but it can also be dangerous. The integrity of the structure becomes compromised where rot is involved. Additionally, mold will flourish in decay, which is not good for the health of your family.

Damaged Shingles

If your shingles are damaged, that is a prominent sign that your roof needs to be replaced. Roof shingles can become cracked, curled, or can go missing from weather conditions. Unfortunately, storm-related damage is very common, even among newly installed roofs. It’s vital to repair this damage right away before it leads to more serious issues.

Unwanted House Plants

Most plant growth can be easily spotted from the outside of your roof, but make sure to also check the interior of your roof for the growth of moss and other unwanted plant material. These growths can cause serious problems. If you notice excessive plant growth around your roof or even inside of your home, you likely need to replace the roof in its entirety.

Even if your roof looks good from the ground view, it is important to regularly inspect your roof– especially if your roof is aging. It’s recommended to thoroughly inspect your roof twice a year– once in the spring and then again in the fall. Regular maintenance is the only way to ensure that a healthy roof is kept over your family’s head.

I needed a copper roof rip/replace in the South End of Boston. After reaching out to a few small one man shows that couldn’t pull a permit I found RB Farina. Not only did they beat the other 2 prices they came up with an all-encompassing quote and explanation of their process. Alex was the guy in charge and he was responsive, professional and likable. I am a construction business owner and I know a pro when I deal with one!! These guys are the real deal

We were very satisfied with the work done by Farina. Our roof is complicated as we have an 18th century Georgian saltbox with two major additions over the last centurey creating lots of angles. The work was done with care, the materials first-rate and the team was professional, curteous and competent. I would highly recommend.

Very happy with the roof replacement RB Farina performed on my house in Winchester. The Sales Manager Paulo answered all my questions, did not push me to sign and provided a very competitive quote. Alex who supervised the job was very approachable, easy to talk to and ensured the job was finished to a very high standard. Very happy customer and would recommend RB Farina!

What a fantastic professional roof and gutter job. They started Friday morning bright and early and my new roof was done by the end of the day Friday. This is a traditional Northeast two family home with a gable roof and two shed dormers. There were skylights as well. The attention to detail was exceptional including in process communication detailing rotten roof boards needing replacement (pictures provided). The gutters were done Saturday morning and finished by noon. The property was cleaned of debris, esp nails and you couldn’t tell they had been there! I would enthusiastically recommend RB Farina to anyone considering a new roof and or gutters!!
