What Is a Roof Boot? Why Your Roof Pipe Boot Is So Important

When it comes to taking care of your home maintenance and repair, it might feel like there’s a never-ending list of things that you need to pay attention to.

From your shingles to your gutters to your insulation to electricity, plumbing, appliances… the list goes on and on. However, it’s important to fully understand all parts of the home to avoid unnecessary damages and expenses down the line.

So, let’s go over a lesser-known part of your roof that plays a huge role in the safety and functioning of your home: a roof pipe boot.

What is a roof boot and why should you care? Well, keep reading to find out!

What Is a Roof Boot?

Take a minute to look at your roof. You’ll likely notice that there are quite a few pipes and/or vents. These are in place to expel waste produced by the home whether that’s from the plumbing, ventilation system, etc.

Around these pipes and vents are protective collars that guard your roof against the water, moisture, and other debris that comes out of these pipes. These “collars” or “covers” around the pipes and vents are called roof boots.

Types of Roof Pipe Boots

Just like roofs themselves, roof boots can be made out of a variety of different materials.

The most common types of roof pipe boots are:

  • Plastic pipe boots
  • Lead pipe boots
  • Cooper boots
  • Rubber collars

Each has its own pros and cons that should be discussed with a roofing expert to see which works best for your home and roofing type.

How Roof Pipe Boots Can Be Damaged

Just like all parts of your home, roof pipe boots are susceptible to damage.

As the temperatures outside change seasonally, the materials that make up your roof will naturally expand and contract. The problem with this is that it can cause the seal between the roof boot and the pipe itself to be not as tight or secure.

This exposes your roof to water… and you know what that means: huge potential for a leaky roof. Leaking roofs can cause a whole laundry list of issues that we go into detail on in one of our blog posts.

Here’s a quick look at the list of damages that could result from leaks caused by a damaged roof boot:

  • Mold and mildew problems
  • Increased energy bills thanks to reduced energy efficiency
  • Insulation damage
  • Structural damage
  • And more

I needed a copper roof rip/replace in the South End of Boston. After reaching out to a few small one man shows that couldn’t pull a permit I found RB Farina. Not only did they beat the other 2 prices they came up with an all-encompassing quote and explanation of their process. Alex was the guy in charge and he was responsive, professional and likable. I am a construction business owner and I know a pro when I deal with one!! These guys are the real deal

We were very satisfied with the work done by Farina. Our roof is complicated as we have an 18th century Georgian saltbox with two major additions over the last centurey creating lots of angles. The work was done with care, the materials first-rate and the team was professional, curteous and competent. I would highly recommend.

Very happy with the roof replacement RB Farina performed on my house in Winchester. The Sales Manager Paulo answered all my questions, did not push me to sign and provided a very competitive quote. Alex who supervised the job was very approachable, easy to talk to and ensured the job was finished to a very high standard. Very happy customer and would recommend RB Farina!

What a fantastic professional roof and gutter job. They started Friday morning bright and early and my new roof was done by the end of the day Friday. This is a traditional Northeast two family home with a gable roof and two shed dormers. There were skylights as well. The attention to detail was exceptional including in process communication detailing rotten roof boards needing replacement (pictures provided). The gutters were done Saturday morning and finished by noon. The property was cleaned of debris, esp nails and you couldn’t tell they had been there! I would enthusiastically recommend RB Farina to anyone considering a new roof and or gutters!!
